Essential January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Businesses

Entering January 2026, businesses and individuals such as employers, farmers, and fishermen must prepare for critical tax deadlines. Strategic foresight and preparation can significantly reduce compliance challenges and eliminate potential penalties from your list of concerns.

January 15 - Employer’s Monthly Deposit Requirement -

If you are an employer subject to monthly deposit rules, ensure the deposit of Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income tax for December 2025 by January 15. The same date applies for the nonpayroll withholding deposit if applicable. All employment tax deposits must be made electronically (without paper coupons); however, if your deposit liability is under $2,500 for the return period, you can opt to remit payments quarterly or annually alongside the return.

January 15 - Guidance for Farmers and Fishermen -

Submit your estimated tax payment for 2025 using Form 1040-ES. While the deadline for filing your 2025 income tax return (Form 1040 or 1040-SR) extends to April 15, failure to pay your estimated tax by January 15 requires filing your 2025 return and settling any due tax by March 2, 2026, to circumvent an estimated tax penalty.

Considerations on Holidays & Weekends:

If a due date aligns with a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, it automatically extends to the following business day that isn’t a holiday itself.

Extensions in Disaster-Impacted Areas:

In designated disaster areas, due dates may receive extensions. For current designations and extended filing dates, consult FEMA and IRS resources:
