Key December 2025 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

Prepare yourself for the year-end fiscal responsibilities with these vital tax reminders: finalizing year-end strategies, reporting gratuities, managing IRA withdrawals, and completing all deductible transactions for 2025.

December 1 - Initiate Year-End Tax Strategy Discussions

December offers the final opportunity to influence your fiscal outcome for 2025. Individuals undergoing substantial income alterations, relationship status changes, dependent variations, or property sales this year should schedule a comprehensive tax planning consultation.

December 10 - Tip Reporting Obligation

Employees earning above $20 in tips during November must submit IRS Form 4070 to their employer by December 10. Your employer is tasked with withholding FICA taxes and income tax from your salary for these tips. Inadequate regular wages to cover these withholdings will result in the uncollected amount being reported in box 8 of your W-2, necessitating payment when filing your annual return.

December 31 - Mandatory IRA Withdrawals Deadline

If you were born before January 1, 1952, today marks the last day for penalty-free withdrawals from your Traditional IRA. Individuals turning 73 in 2025 (born January 1, 1952 - December 31, 1952) have until April 1, 2026, to make their first mandatory distribution. For those needing withdrawal by December 31 and whose IRA custodians will not operate on that date, early arrangements are essential.

December 31 - Final Opportunity for Deductible Transactions

Complete any deductible payments related to your 2025 return by December 31, with exceptions for IRA, SEP, and Keogh contributions, which can extend beyond this date.

December 31 - Year-End Advisory

If certain actions are difficult to execute on December 31 itself, due to potential closures of financial institutions, it’s prudent to address these matters beforehand.

Weekends & Holidays Consideration

If any deadline falls on a weekend or a legal holiday, expect an automatic extension to the next operational day.

Extended Deadlines Due to Disasters

Regions recognized as disaster areas may see deadline extensions. For confirmation and updated filings, consult FEMA and the IRS.
