Millions Claimed the New OBBBA Tax Breaks—Did You Miss Out?

At Cherokee CPA, we love seeing our Georgia small business owners and individual clients keep more of their hard-earned money. Following the mid-2025 enactment of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), federal officials reported that over 53 million individual filers claimed newly created tax benefits. While Treasury and IRS statistics show widespread adoption of these tax planning strategies, independent polling reveals that many eligible taxpayers are still leaving cash on the table.

Popular OBBBA Tax Deductions Claimed

During the 2026 filing season, administration leaders praised the OBBBA for delivering middle-class tax relief. Several provisions saw heavy use:

  • Overtime Pay Deduction: Over 25 million filers utilized this new deduction for overtime wages, with the average claim hovering around $3,100.
  • Tip Income Deduction: More than 6 million returns featured the tip deduction, averaging just over $7,100 per claim.
  • Enhanced Senior Deduction: Over 30 million older taxpayers claimed this benefit. While the credit is capped at $6,000 per eligible senior (or $12,000 for qualifying married couples filing jointly), the average claim sat near $7,500.
  • American-Made Auto Loan Interest: Just over 1 million filers successfully deducted interest paid on qualifying domestic car loans.
  • Standard Deductions and New Accounts: The permanently doubled standard deduction benefited well over 100 million filers. Additionally, about 5 million Trump Accounts were established for children under 18, though these accounts do not yield a direct tax deduction.

The Awareness Gap: Are You Missing Out?

Thanks to these breaks, the IRS reported larger average refunds. By early April, the agency processed 120 million returns and issued 80 million refunds totaling near $274 billion. The mean refund hit $3,462—an 11% increase from last year. However, a Bipartisan Policy Center survey highlights a substantial awareness gap.

While 27% of respondents earned overtime pay, only 15% claimed the corresponding deduction. Similarly, 17% earned tip income, yet just 10% utilized the tip deduction.

Common Stumbling Blocks for Taxpayers

Why the disconnect? Several practical hurdles prevented taxpayers from maximizing their benefits:

  • 2025 Transitional Rules: Because Forms W-2 and 1099 were not updated to separately track cash tips or qualified overtime, employers failed to provide exact totals, leaving taxpayers guessing.
  • Eligibility Confusion: Navigating income phaseouts and occupation restrictions proved complex, causing technically eligible workers to miss out.
  • Payroll Nuances: Incomes consolidated on employer records often masked available deductions without an expert eye looking closely at the details.
  • Recordkeeping Burden: Complex new elections deterred filers from claiming benefits without professional tax preparation help.
